Augmented Reality Systems Optical Terminology Part II: Non-Imaging Terms

At JOYA Team, we always try to search for more effective ways and platforms to share our knowledge and expertise with others and reach out to more people that can learn from us.

One of the most interesting invitations we accepted was writing a tutorial article for the Photonics Views magazine. This magazine is valued by many in the photonics community and hosts very interesting articles from technology development and products companies. It’s been an honor and a privilege to write an article for this magazine, and since we had so much to say on the subject, the paper turned into 2-parts tutorial article.

 

The subject of the article by Olga Resnik with the assistance and combined knowledge of our entire team is Augmented / Virtual / Mixed Reality Systems Optical Terminology. In fact, we believe that every XR system development is based on the deep understanding of different aspects of the system and their connection to the user experience and the specific use case the system is trying to solve. This is the second part of the tutorial article where we cover the basic Augmented Reality Systems Non-Imaging terms parameters, including spectrum and polarization; ghost and stray light; uniformity. We dive into their definition, explanation, different technological and engineering insights on a system design level and considerations for the formation of system requirements based on the use-case specifics. We also consider the difficult trade-offs that are a part of every system development and their impact on the user experience, what considerations are important and in general how the use-case driven development can differentiate a winning and successful product that is adopted by the market. This part concludes the article considering both imaging and non-imaging system aspects.
