At JOYA Team, we always try to search for more effective ways and platforms to share our knowledge and expertise with others and reach out to more people that can learn from us.
One of the most interesting invitations we accepted was writing a tutorial article for the Photonics Views magazine. This magazine is valued by many in the photonics community and hosts very interesting articles from technology development and products companies. It’s been an honor and a privilege to write an article for this magazine, and since we had so much to say on the subject, the paper turned into 2-parts tutorial article.
The subject of the article by Olga Resnik with the assistance and combined knowledge of our entire team is Augmented / Virtual / Mixed Reality Systems Optical Terminology. In fact, we believe that every XR system development is based on the deep understanding of different aspects of the system and their connection to the user experience and the specific use case the system is trying to solve. So here we attempt to create a reference for the various optical terms. To read more in-depth articles for optical terms, explore our Optical Terms Library.
This is the second part of the tutorial article where we cover the basic Augmented Reality Systems Non-Imaging terms parameters, including spectrum and polarization; ghost and stray light; uniformity. We dive into their definition, explanation, different technological and engineering insights on a system design level and considerations for the formation of system requirements based on the use-case specifics. We also consider the difficult trade-offs that are a part of every system development and their impact on the user experience, what considerations are important and in general how the use-case driven development can differentiate a winning and successful product that is adopted by the market. This part concludes the article considering both imaging and non-imaging system aspects.
This user-centric process also drives innovative and non-conventional solutions that help these products stand out, be attractive and highly successful.

We want to share our experience of more than two decades with the professional community and create a standard for everyone, starting from entrepreneurs with use case and application ideas, system engineers that define the system architecture and requirements, optical designers and engineers that develop these systems, assembly and testing engineers, and technicians.
Whether you just want to have a better understanding of augmented reality systems design challenges and user-centric considerations, are in the middle of the development process already or want to develop an augmented reality product from scratch - you should contact us to have JOYA Team as your optical design house.
Our expertise in optical system engineering area and optical system development allows us to make the optical development process fast and cost-effective, we can spot the pitfalls and the most critical challenges. We offer our vast experience to all companies, small and large, we are here to help you with optical products development, especially expertizing in XR systems engineering, design through all the stages to the prototyping, testing and transfer to production. There is no other company that can provide this span of services and makes them available on a project basis.
